Revalidation

Introduced in December 2012 by the General Medical Council, revalidation is a process which requires doctors practising in the UK to have their on-going fitness to practise re-affirmed every five years.

Collaboration

Uk Medical Revalidation Evaluation coLLAboration (UMbRELLA) brings together regulatory academics and revalidation implementers from across the United Kingdom, including the CAMERA research group, Plymouth University, Improvement Science London UCL, Manchester Business School, NHS Education for Scotland, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Wales Deanery and Belfast NHS Trust.

Research

The UMbRELLA collaboration has been brought together to evaluate the regulatory impact of medical revalidation within its first cycle of implementation. Using a mixed methods approach to examine both large statistical datasets and in-depth qualitative data, we seek to understand how revalidation is taking shape in the UK.

UMbRELLA: shaping the future of medical revalidation

This website is the online home of a major evaluative research study into the regulatory impacts of medical revalidation, commissioned by the General Medical Council, and delivered independently by a UK-wide collaboration.

The site provides updates about the progress of our research, and also provides resources such as information about revalidation including news and links to key policy documents.

Please contact us with any suggestions for improvements to the site.
